  • Home décor you shouldn't forget

The devil's in the details: the home decor accessories you shouldn't forget

You’ve invested in the gorgeous sideboards, matching bookcases and even plumped for the finest sofa suite money can buy! However, what about all those tiny little finishing touches? You know what we mean: the easy-to-overlook decor items that really make a house a home and bring a scheme together.

Here are just a few that will transform a finished room into an unforgettable haven of stellar taste:

    1. Solid wood mirrors

Not only are mirrors useful, they can make a space look twice the size it is! When a mirror is placed in the right spot and they honestly fill a wall so much more elegantly than a picture or some shabby paintwork. Solid wood mirrors will never age or date your room, because they are such a staple classic and if you make sure they are stained to match the rest of your timber pieces, will create a really harmonious interior design look.

    2. Doorstop Decor

This is a strange tip because you probably won’t ever notice that you’re missing attractive doorstops; however, once you have them, you’ll understand how ‘together’ they make your home look. No more using an old slipper, a rolled up newspaper or a rogue piece of cardboard to keep a door open, as a stylish doorstop does all the hard work for you and tells guests how detail orientated you are too.

    3. Beautiful lamps

So your main lighting is working and doing what it’s supposed to, that’s great! However, nothing beats turning off the main beam in favour of some ambient lamp lighting in the evening. Add in the fact that pretty lamps make the most of a side or coffee table. Furthermore, they inject so much coziness too and you’ll see why you need a couple. Try mixing things up with a blend of floor and table lamps with natural shades for a rustic vibe.link to log lamps

    4. Scented candles for home decor

Diffusers can be a little aggressive and they rarely look attractive either; which is why for the perfect scent of a welcoming home, you need to stay old school and invest in some candles. Yankee Candles are, of course, a longstanding favourite with a scent for just about everything. Try mixing up your fragrances according to different rooms, with fresh linen in the bedrooms and maybe a sea salt note for the bathroom.

    5. Seasonal flowers

Nothing says ‘I take pride in my home’ quite like seasonal blooms out on display, all year round. You don’t have to go crazy; but, a vase in the entrance hall is a nice touch, maybe some small posies in guest rooms and always a good sprig in the living room too. The reason flowers work so well is that they offer a multisensory pleasure; plus, they bring a little of the glorious outdoors inside for everybody to enjoy.

These small but significant touches will ensure that your home looks and feels perfect, whoever should drop by! This leaves you to just carry out an emergency pillow fluff when the doorbell rings.

  • Creating a “Luxury Lodge” Look

Today’s modern lodge aesthetic is a sophisticated blend of texture, color, and craftsmanship that is instantly welcoming and elegantly understated.  While the “Luxury Lodge” style is finding its way into everything from city lofts to little bungalows, for those of us lucky enough to live in areas where nature’s bounty & beauty are all around us, the look is a natural extension of our lifestyle.

To pull this look together in your home, Woodland Creek Furniture’s interior designers suggest starting with your foundation (i.e., the floor) and literally building the look from the ground up.  In this way, you will create a layered look with a natural flow and ease. The key is to find balance between pattern & simplicity, texture & color.

For a few thoughts on the perfect foundation we’ve reached out to the folks at New Moon Rugs, who’s Mesa Rug Collection sets the bar for the “Luxury Lodge” look, and asked them to give us their thoughts on how to choose the right rug to pull your room together.

    Look to your surroundings:

Choose colors and design elements that complement the surrounding countryside, or the architectural elements used within the home.  That doesn’t always mean matching; however, sometimes the use of a bold color can enhance the richness of the materials in the room! Furthermore, it could pop against the palette of the great outdoors when put beside a picture window or glass wall.

How is the room being used?

When choosing a rug with large fields of solid color. In addition, consider a heathered tone for high traffic areas such as entryways and kitchens. Patterns, and color palettes with varied tones will help to hide dirt in between vacuuming.

Choose materials that will fit the use.  High quality wool is nature’s performance material! It will stand up to generations of parties, pets, and indoor picnics on cold nights.  Himalayan wools, like the Tibetan wool used in New Moon Rugs, have a high lanolin content! This makes them naturally stain resistant and easy to spot clean with mild soap and water…  No chemicals or synthetics needed! Which keeps with the natural vibe at the heart of the Luxury Lodge design ethos.

Layer in furniture and accessories with natural elements

Part of the allure of the lodge life is the deep connection with nature.  The finest luxury lodges bring elements of nature indoors in sophisticated ways.  Live edge wood, hammered copper, buttery leather, and natural stone are all excellent materials! They are great materials to introduce into the room in furniture and decorative accents.  Offset these with luxe, textural fabrics in upholstery, pillows, throws, and window treatments (furniture photos courtesy of Woodland Creek Furniture).

Don’t feel boxed into a specific vernacular in your design

Luxury Lodge encompasses everything from classic western motifs to clean modern design.  It’s not about a specific “look”.  It’s about a specific “feel”.  The goal is to create a welcoming environment for family & guests, surrounding yourself with the people and pieces that bring joy and have meaning to you. At its core, the Luxury Lodge design movement is about creating a space from floor to ceiling! One that celebrates nature, fine craftsmanship, community, and personal style.
